As we raced up murder hill on the last day 96 of our epic journey we were greeted by our loyal followers and friends of the Lorax Woodlands. It's good to be home.

Day 96: Chester Grant to Lorax Woodlands (The Last Gasp)
Despite all the reflection the night before, we awoke just like any other morning. It's amazing how you can get into a routine and despite the fact that we all knew it was going to end that afternoon, it didn't really feel any different. Packing up the tents and sleeping bags one last time was just the same as on day 54 (though they need to be aired out a little more urgently now!) and without much fuss, we were on the road again.
Despite having driven this road many, many times, on the bike the were still some surprises. In some ways it almost seemed shorter than I expected, wand though there were certainly hills, it wasn't as steep as I'd feared. An hour of easy riding brought us in to New Ross.
In an enormous universe filled with so many random events, things are bound to happen, but still, what happened next seems like a bit more than just chance. I've seen a lot of country on this trip, been to a lot of places - some great, some not - but this finally proved that New Ross just doesn't like me. I don't know what I ever did to it, but I certainly will never forget what it's done to me.
For the first 16 years of my life we got along fine, mostly ignoring each other. Then one fateful night, driving home with my father from a party in Bridgewater, a guy blew through the stop sign in New Ross and with a tremendous crash our cars crumpled together, front corner to front corner. The cars were totaled, but luckily we were all OK (though going from asleep in the front seat to Screech-BANG! to sitting trembling in a crumpled car was quite a shock). My legs wouldn't hold me for at least 30min, and to this day I always watch that intersection carefully, so my association with New Ross hasn't been so pleasant.
I tried to look on the bright side, told myself that I'd had my one big accident and so I shouldn't ever have to deal with it again, but I was only partly right. As I pedaled up the steep hill to the fateful intersection, flashing light visible just as it was all those years ago, I downshifted, heard a bang, my bike suddenly stopped and then I gracelessly tipped over in the middle of the hill. I'd evidently gotten somewhat used to falling while clipped in because I landed quite well with only a minor scrape, but when I looked around to figure out what had happened, I quickly saw that my bike, my trusty steed who'd carried me 5600km hadn't fared so well.
Rear derailleurs are supposed to hang below the gears, not be tangled in the spokes above them...
By the time the rest of the team caught up, I'd extracted the broken derailleur and determined that there wasn't any other damage (thankfully the wheel/spokes survived, unlike Spencer's experience back around White River, ON when his derailleur got sucked into his rear wheel while doing 50km/hr down a hill, breaking half the spokes and he ended up skidding it out done the mountain!) However, the fact remained that my bike wasn't going to be pedaled anywhere until it had a good session at a bike shop.
We'd been doing so well - 95 days and a combined 36,000km pedaled (almost equivalent to riding around the planet - 40,000km) without any dire bike problems, without ever having to stick out our thumb or call for help, but there we were, stuck 45km from the final destination. Te only good side to it was that unlike most of the rest of the country, back here in NS, our home turf, we had lots of support we could use.
So within a few minutes, a rescue mission was organized. Justin would drive out from Lorax with his bike, and take mine back, letting me finish the journey on his. Although the ending of the trip was turning out to be pretty anti-climatic, it would have been rather disappointing to not be able to have us all ride in to Lorax together, so big huge thanks to Justin! And Carla wasn't about to pass up the chance to see/rescue her sister after so long, so she came along too, but also brought her bike and escorted us back. And like everything else on our trip, a pretty big problem was quickly sorted out and in the end it was even better than before.
However, Justin is a little smaller than me and his bike has drop bars, so it took a little getting used to before I felt comfortable riding it. And he also hadn't gotten around to fitting a granny-gear on the bike. Any other day I wouldn't have thought much of it, I rarely use my granny even fully loaded, but not today, not with "Murder Hill" (Deep Hollow Rd where it climbs up the South Mountain - as named by the first Otesha tour to climb it) on our path. So I dumped all my gear in the car with my bike, and crossed my fingers I'd make it up in middle gear.
Two hours after the breakdown (including a second breakfast at Vittles Cafe - judged a strong contender in the quest for the best fried potatoes/hash browns), we were back on the bikes, riding home. After 7600km, 40 didn't seem so big anymore and the time flew by. Familiar landmarks came and went with increasing frequency, but in many ways it didn't seem any different, we were all together riding our bikes, just like any other day.
And then before we knew it, we were there, poised at the White Rock intersection with only a short gentle glide between us and Murder Hill. Our hill climbing muscles were out of practice with all the flat terrain since Ottawa, but we'd all ridden (and beaten) this beast before so we knew we could make it up. So on came the tunes and with a big whoop we tore off and started the ascent. I started to feel the burn in my legs rounding the curve (maybe 15% of the way up) but with adrenaline and determination I kept on pushing. Slowly but surely we climbed, rotation by rotation, breath by breath. It wasn't easy - even in this shape, but neither was it the eternity of struggle we had feared. And eventually, one by one, we each gave a victory cry and rolled to a stop at the top, legs trembling, muscles burning, lungs gasping, and faces grinning. I'd say it was the hardest hill I climbed on the trip (with an honorable mention to the devil just before Denbigh, ON) but it hadn't been so bad, and it was done.
Once we'd caught our breath we pushed on, slowly chugging towards our final destination. Trying to figure out what it was going to be like to stop. We put on some tunes to carry us home, theme songs for the trip in a way, and so rolled up to the driveway with everyone singing gently along to "The Bike Song" and "Long Way Home". It was so incredibly calm and peaceful, not what I had expected, but it felt right. It had been a long, long trip, but we were now home.
And the welcome wagon was there to greet us! With homemade signs cheering us on down the last stretch and a checkered race flag hanging on the Lorax sign, all our friends at Lorax rushed out to greet us. It was pretty surreal - we'd just ridden across the continent but it was done, we'd all be shortly heading off on our own ways and the life we'd shared was closed - tomorrow would not be just another day on the bikes, and we were going to have to start interacting with the wider world in a serious way again. It's not bad, we all have exciting plans/adventures to continue with and we were (at least at times) starting to feel ready to something else, but it's one thing to think it, and another to actually make the change.
And so before we could really process it, the greetings had been exchanged, some stories hinted at and plans hatched, and we split off into our groups and went to settle into our three respective houses. On to the next world...
The photos and videos will be wonderful to go back through, triggering thoughts and stories that will last a lifetime, but even now I realize that this experience can't be replicated, can't be relived or fully shared with others. There's something magical about a bike and open roads, it's not a series of events or a goal to accomplish, it is a process.
Although the odometer won't click on any further, the experience doesn't end here, and for you, our loyal followers, neither does this story. Over the next week or two we are all going to find some time to reflect and write, and at least parts of these reflections should make their way here. So keep checking back, but also try to ween yourself from this tale - it's not going to last forever and we are certainly in the last stages.
Most importantly though, thank you for your energy, your enthusiasm and support. Writing all this is a good exercise for ourselves, but it has so much more meaningful and seems so much more worth while when we know that the are other people out there following along too.

Day 95: Kingsburg to Chester Grant (The Journey Home)
We all know that any good tale has a begging, middle and end. But we sometimes forget that after the end begins the journey home...
I have often compared our journey to The lord of the rings trilogy before. When Frodo threw the ring into mount doom his adventures didn't end. He was faced with the task of returning home, and re-adjusting to the way things had become. This was not easy for Frodo...
So it is today, with mixed emotions that we leave the excitement of the last real stopping point on our trip and head towards a real staying point. We are really excited to see our amazing friends and family at Lorax but at the same time know that when we do, the warpotay team will split and the pressures of everyday life will return. Over the last 95 days we have formed a family bond that is hard to find in this day in age. We feel very lucky to have had this opportunity and will be sad to end the journey.
After a swim and boogyboard at one of the most beautiful beaches in Canada we began our journey home. Retracing our steps from the day before through Lunenburg and Mahone I was struck by two solemn thoughts.
Firstly, in our 3 months on the road this is perhaps the only time we have ever rode the same piece of pavement twice for any significant amount of time. Something about this speaks to me but I can't put it into words.
Secondly, the town near Oak Island which had been bustling yesterday in preparation for the parade was now silent. This reminded me that things have changed since we left. Home will not be the same. Mom and Papa are headed to New Zealand, Shane back to India and Leah and I to spend time with Carla and Justin on their farm. I for one am both excited and nervous about this thought.
With this in mind we decided that tonight should be a quiet time of reflection. A clearing on a seldom used cottage road was the perfect spot . Late afternoon changed to dusk and dusk to night as we sat on the soft ground, reflecting on our trip. We laughed about the funny times of the trip, recalled the magnitude of interesting people we met along the way, and above all else enjoyed each others company one last time. However I am constantly reminded that while tomorrow may be the last day of the Warpotay adventure it is only the first of the Journey Home...

Day 94: St. Margaret's Bay to Kingsburg (The Pirate's Revenge)

"Are they still in Moncton?"
"No, I know they are not still in Moncton, but I don't know where they are."
Yes we admit to a bit of skullduggery but the company of five was on a mission of subterfuge and plunder, going underground on Saturday, August 13 and morphing into marauding pirates. So as to hide our plot from the victims, it became important to disguise our progress on the blog lest they suspect we were up to pirate mischief. We apologize to our innocent followers who may have been confused by our erratic postings. Why pirates? Why August 13? We will give you a very abridged bit of backstory to set the scene.
Our good friends Cate and Leon were married on August 13, 2010. They are wonderful people and exquisite planners who planned an amazing, perfect wedding. So WarPoTay and several other accomplices felt that a bit of chaos was needed to add an air of reality to this perfect wedding on the beach at Kingsburg Nova Scotia. One year ago, two pirates showed up coming in to the beach in a canoe from the mother ship, uninvited in the afternoon. They dramatically delivered a warning note in a bottle to the bride and groom. They should "Expect Chaos" that night. That evening more pirates invaded the reception, took over the hall, tied up the bride and groom and made them overcome a series of challenges to prove the appropriateness of their marriage. The pirates succeeded and chaos was wrought on the wedding. But alas, chaos was also wrought on the pirates as one older pirate tore his achilles tendon during the afternoon caper while sprinting on the beach. As a result the pirates since that time thave been looking for the opportunity for revenge. The opportunity availed itself recently when the WarPoTay Adventures were invited to the Cate and Leon anniversary dance in the exact same locale one year later (today, August 13). The Adventurers officially declined the invite several weeks ago saying they would not be finished the trip in time. We then proceeded to hide our tracks with the blog in the past few days in hopes of convincing Cate and Leon that in fact they were too far away to make the party. Back to the story of our attack...
Pirates need to eat well so we started the day with a magnificent breakfast with Susan and Bob in St. Margaret's Bay (we hope they do not get into trouble for providing tasty provisions to the pirates). Our path during the day was carefully crafted to stay off roads where we might be sighted by other party goers who would know us, or worst of all by Cate and Leon.
We did the first 35 km on a beautiful off road, bike path with magnificent views out over St. Margaret's Bay. We were safe from prying eyes. When the path started to deteriorate in quality we headed to the smaller, hilly, coastal road, crossing picturesque South Shore rivers and harbours.
Sometimes the best cover involves being in the open while blending into the landscape, so we chose a lunch spot in a waterfront park in the community of Western Shore where large numbers of people were along the roadside waiting for a parade to start. Things were smooth until the very end of lunch, when disaster nearly struck. We could see the parade forming and tuning up, and knowing it was approaching 2 pm (a logical start time}, we figured we had 10 minutes to finish lunch and get out ahead of the parade or else we would be stuck behind it. Given it was a long parade, being stuck behind it could wreck our tight arrival schedule since we had 45 km left going into the wind to bike to Kingsburg. Things seemed fine as Ginny and Leah went to throw out the lunch garbage just prior taking off ahead of the parade. But the other three pirates waited and waited, watching from a distance as the pair belaboured over the garbage can and the bagpiper at the start of the parade started piping such that the parade start seemed imminent. More time passed... how long could it take to separate garbage, recycling and compost into their respective bins?... More time passed... Yet they remained despite more bagpipe notes and our now frantic calls... "Ginny, Leah, we have got to go!" The others got on our bikes and called one more time. Finally Ginny and Leah returned back to the bikes, leaving the garbage bins behind. What had been the problem?... Why did it take 10 minutes to separate the garbage? Finally Pirate Ginny fessed up during the afternoon ride. She had dropped her knife (a key weapon for a pirate) in the compost bin with the lunch compost. So Ginny and Leah were trying to unobtrusively (not so successful) fish out the compost as the heavier knife had fallen in deep. Phew, they finally retrieved the knife and we got out of Western Shore just barely before the start of the parade.
We biked through the afternoon along beautiful inlets and waterways to Kingsburg, with a stop along the way in Lunenburg to improve our pirate costumes at Frenchies and to strengthen our bellies with ice cream. We arrived at our safe house just off the road before Kingsburg by 5:15 pm. Marc and Maureen were not there but said we could cook dinner and costume and arm ourselves at will for the invasion (Thank you M&M for supporting this pirate caper). 6:45 pm, all was set and it did not seem anyone had caught wind of us. We slowly biked the last kilometre. We quietly rolled down the last hill behind the trees to see what would confront us... would everyone already be in the barn for the start of the dance lessons (not a good scenario for a pirate bike invasion)? Would they still be outside?... We peered out around the trees... Perfect, everyone was outside finishing dinner around the house... We instantly shifted into our fast downhill gears and attacked with a roar, flags flying and weapons glistening in the evening sun... Total surprise!
We jumped off our bikes, threatened the party with plunder, and finally agreed to the alternative of partying if they would provide the beer and dance music (Thank you Cate and Leon!). Having executed our surprise elegantly, we had redeemed our image from the self-inflicted chaos of a year ago.

Our path during the day was carefully crafted to stay off roads where we might be sighted by other party goers who would know us, or worst of all by Cate and Leon.
We did the first 35 km on a beautiful off road, bike path with magnificent views out over St. Margaret's Bay. We were safe from prying eyes. When the path started to deteriorate in quality we headed to the smaller, hilly, coastal road, crossing picturesque South Shore rivers and harbours.
Sometimes the best cover involves being in the open while blending into the landscape, so we chose a lunch spot in a waterfront park in the community of Western Shore where large numbers of people were along the roadside waiting for a parade to start. Things were smooth until the very end of lunch, when disaster nearly struck. We could see the parade forming and tuning up, and knowing it was approaching 2 pm (a logical start time}, we figured we had 10 minutes to finish lunch and get out ahead of the parade or else we would be stuck behind it. Given it was a long parade, being stuck behind it could wreck our tight arrival schedule since we had 45 km left going into the wind to bike to Kingsburg. Things seemed fine as Ginny and Leah went to throw out the lunch garbage just prior taking off ahead of the parade. But the other three pirates waited and waited, watching from a distance as the pair belaboured over the garbage can and the bagpiper at the start of the parade started piping such that the parade start seemed imminent. More time passed... how long could it take to separate garbage, recycling and compost into their respective bins?... More time passed... Yet they remained despite more bagpipe notes and our now frantic calls... "Ginny, Leah, we have got to go!" The others got on our bikes and called one more time. Finally Ginny and Leah returned back to the bikes, leaving the garbage bins behind. What had been the problem?... Why did it take 10 minutes to separate the garbage? Finally Pirate Ginny fessed up during the afternoon ride. She had dropped her knife (a key weapon for a pirate) in the compost bin with the lunch compost. So Ginny and Leah were trying to unobtrusively (not so successful) fish out the compost as the heavier knife had fallen in deep. Phew, they finally retrieved the knife and we got out of Western Shore just barely before the start of the parade.
We biked through the afternoon along beautiful inlets and waterways to Kingsburg, with a stop along the way in Lunenburg to improve our pirate costumes at Frenchies and to strengthen our bellies with ice cream. We arrived at our safe house just off the road before Kingsburg by 5:15 pm. Marc and Maureen were not there but said we could cook dinner and costume and arm ourselves at will for the invasion (Thank you M&M for supporting this pirate caper). 6:45 pm, all was set and it did not seem anyone had caught wind of us. We slowly biked the last kilometre. We quietly rolled down the last hill behind the trees to see what would confront us... would everyone already be in the barn for the start of the dance lessons (not a good scenario for a pirate bike invasion)? Would they still be outside?... We peered out around the trees... Perfect, everyone was outside finishing dinner around the house... We instantly shifted into our fast downhill gears and attacked with a roar, flags flying and weapons glistening in the evening sun... Total surprise!
We jumped off our bikes, threatened the party with plunder, and finally agreed to the alternative of partying if they would provide the beer and dance music (Thank you Cate and Leon!). Having executed our surprise elegantly, we had redeemed our image from the self-inflicted chaos of a year ago.

Day 93: Porters Lake to Saint Margaret's Bay (Ahhh Friends!)
Riding through Dartmouth and into Halifax was lovely. At Point Pleasant Park we were greeted by Terry, George, Tamarack, Marc and Maureen. That meant a lot. Ahh friends! We also met up with a fellow biker friend, Dustin who we met in BC at the start of our trip and who had also just arrived in Halifax after crossing the country by bike. Nice.
The bike ride to Susan and Bob's place was gorgeous. After whining about the lack of bicycle trails in Nova Scotia, we picked up the great Rails to Trails trail that starts in town, and goes very close to their house. It was beautiful and I had to eat my whining words, criticizing NS for not having bike trails.
Then what a treat at Susan and Bob's. As always, the garden is amazing, and that is an understatement. The anti-pasta was largely from their garden, and featured an incredible garlic scape pesto. It only got better from there. In the long tradition of obsessing about food on this trip, that meal rivaled anything we could possible have dreamed of. And we slept so well again that night. Alan and Ginny opted to sleep in their tent, so they could continue to savour the deep sleep that comes with sleeping outside after a day with exercise and fresh air. The only disappointment that day was the realization that we are not really superhuman after all. We failed to ride up Susan and Bob's driveway, an also failed to ride up their neighbours driveway - way steeper than the Quebec City steep hill! But we never thought we were superhuman - just an incredibly lucky family sharing the trip of a lifetime on a bicycle ride across Canada.
Ahhh friends. We love you all, and are so moved by the opportunity to see you all at the end of this amazing adventure. Thank you all for everything.

Day 92: Musquodoboit Harbour to Porters Lake (Transitions)
We woke up to a foggy Nova Scotia shore morning in our cozy island cabin. A quick breakfast, goodbye to our hosts and we were off on a short ride to Porters Lake to visit Steve, Sarah-Marie and Reubin. In many ways this was the first day of the end of our journey, for our journey and theirs has been connected through the blog and some common realities over the past three months. It was amazing to have Sarah-Marie and Reubin waiting to welcome us out on the road and soon we got to see Steve as well.
They have been on very, very different journeys, living and struggling with Steve's cancer and building an amazing row boat, a "Cosine Wherry" made of cedar strips. There was a bet as to whether we would complete the trip or they would complete the boat first and it seems we have won, but just by a week. Steve argues though that it could float at present, though it still needs seats and oarlocks. A cedar strip rowboat is fascinating, extremely light and stunning when varnished and shining with the multcoloured strips. The name is drawn from its mathematical design which maximizes its efficiency in moving through the water under row power. Steve's reality, and Sarah Marie who shares it with him, is very present oriented. When beset by illness, one cannot plan for the future, rather it is a day at a time with attention to eating, sleeping and being. They work on the boat when they can, Sarah Marie doing most of it of late, and they try to stay in the moment outside of other realities. In that sense it is very much like us on the bikes. We start each day with a hope of where we would like to get to by the evening but wind, rain, bike issues or things we stumble into can quickly change that agenda. we get to where we get and never think more than a few days out. By now we are relatively unaware of the outside world beyond our immediate experience (unlike us, Steve is tuned into the social and political realities of world events). Our bike conversation focus on things along the road, our next treat or meal or the weather. The last couple of days have started to be challenging with the realities of having to think about what happens after the trip, topics we have tried to avoid, and now it is getting more difficult. Folks are e mailing us saying when can we get together, and the first reaction is "I don't know, we can't know where we will be— quite different relative to our normal working lives. It has been wonderful to talk and share our respective journeys over the past three months with Steve, Sarah Marie and Reubin. Now we must struggle with transitions as we move forward.

Day 91: Onslow to Musquodoboit Harbour (The Triumph of Pedal Power)
We were up with the morning traffic, breakfast and into Truro for a shop. Ughh, we found a new fancy Sobeys with no vegetables or fruit from the Maritimes despite all the wonderful produce grown around here. They did have blueberries which were a 'product of Canada' although they were distributed by a company in New Jersey. Apples were available from Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, South Africa and the US, but not from the Annapolis Valley, the apple growing centre of Canada (in fact there was nothing from Canada at all). They there was only one check out open with a big line while they had another clerk twiddling her thumbs hoping to teach people who did not want to wait to do the self check out (you can guess their corporate agenda). Let's see if we can avoid Sobey's for the rest of the trip (I know that Superstore is not exactly a benevolent corporation but at least they do better at some things. Enough of the grocery store rant, off we went to play the 'up/down game'...
... Uphill... Downhill... Uphill... Downhill... Up... Down... Up... Down... Up... Down... Up... Down... (if you are tire of reading the up/down game, imagine playing. We set the one day record for number of gears used while traversing the province on small beautiful roads that we had never been on, and we have been on most roads in Nova Scotia. It was scenic steep and short hills through forests and farms. Wittenburg was at the centre of the area and if my memory serve me right, the original Wittenburg is a town in the hills or mountains of Germany or Austria.

we expected smoother going as we headed down the Musquodoboit River Valley.
No such luck... There's nothing like a hilly river valley. In fact, we are in shape and hills are not a big deal at this point, especially when the country side is pretty.
We arrived in Musquodoboit Harbour where we were going to camp on the grass outside a friends' house on a beautiful island in the Harbour. In another one of those fortuitous circumstances, Don and Monica Fraser just finished a beautiful cozy cabin below the house that sleeps 5! And rain was setting in...Twist our arms... we quickly said "uncle" on the phone and took the cabin. So we wanted to bring some wine as an appreciate gift. Alas the liquor store was 5 km uphill into a ferocious storm wind. Shane and Alan answered the call for volunteers while the rest just happened to stumble into the local bakery to wait. This was a time when a bit of riding into adversity was fun, because once there, with wine and beer in our baskets, we got to ride back downhill with a big wind behind us. The highlight was when we left a perplexed man on an electric scooter in the dust. Hurrah for pedal power!
We returned and rejoined the bakery clan, headed for the Frasers, found our cool cabin,
and then it was time for great conversation (stories of Don and Monica's skunk trapping exploits which did not end well), wine, beer, tasty snacks, and a hearty dinner (it's a tough life- but there were a lot of hills today!). Thank you Don and Monica.

Day 90: Amherst to Lower Onslow (grumpys)
We awoke to the smell of bacon and eggs sizzling downstairs. We had another wonder meal that Emile made for us. With our bellies full and our clothes dry we hoped back on our bikes to tackle folly mountain.
We rode through the rolling hills of the beautiful nova scotia countryside and into the tiny town of Oxford. Although Oxford is known as the blue berry capital of nova scotia, that is not what we will remember it for. (for us that title goes to the highway near miramachi) No, Oxford will be remembered for the little mom an pops bakery called "Grumpy's" where we scarfed down top notch cinnamon buns with a complimentary cup of hot chocolate and tea on an inside porch of thier cozy house.
It was indeed cozy because the temperatures outside were frigid and depressing considering it is early august! However the hardest decision of the day came when we had to decide what fine baked goods we would take with us for lunch.
This same dilemma is one we face nearly every day in the bakery section of the grocery store and even after 90 days, it is still one of the toughest parts of our journey. Today, Ginger snaps, apple strudel and trail cookies all got the nod.
The second surprise of Oxford was the finding of a former traveling friend. Sitting outside the library tapping away on her iPhone, trying to get wifi from the Oxford library. Sorry brenna, it's closed.
If you recall, we first saw brenna in Sault-saint Marie and then actually met her on the ferry to Tobermory. Since then our routes couldn't have been more different. She went south to Toronto and up through Kingston and finally through the saint johns river valley. In fact , this little library way off the beaten path was ironically the first time our paths crossed.
With that we departed the lovly town of Oxford and bid farewell to brenna as we prepared ourselves for... Folly Mountain.
Like many other words in the English language, the word "mountain" can sometimes be Subjective, depending on where you're from.
Leah is from the west coast, home of Paulson, Alison and Anarchist passes. The rest of the warpos make thier home on the mighty south mountain of Nova Scotia. Folly mountain just outside Oxford, is not quite as big as either, though if it had been sunny I sure we still would have broken a sweat...
Even still, we enjoyed the rapid descent off folly mountain and into the agricultural outskirts of Truo call , Lower Onslow. Wanting for a quiet place to rest our head and begin our reintegration into Nova Scotia, we found the perfect spot, a soft spot of grass next to a monument.
Upon it's worn stone face the monument marked the spot as a tradition stopping place of the French, British and Aboriginal peoples. It seems a very fitting place to rest our heads...

Day 89: Moncton to Amherst: The Ducks Find an Inspiring Home
"What is this? I am not sure I should let you in. You look like a bunch of ducks." That's how Emile Gautreau greeted us as we stepped over the threshold into his beautiful house in Amherst, Nova Scotia (!). We were drenched to the bone after 8 hours of biking in the pouring rain, though we did have a two hour lunch stop in Sackville NB to recharge.
In the process we had crossed into Nova Scotia— home. It was tough to take the requisite picture in front of the "Welcome to Nova Scotia" sign because of all the standing water on the grass.
After the tourist information person knew we were Nova Scotian, and when we explained that it was ridiculously wet here, his only response was "Welcome to Nova Scotia" (paraphrased it meant: "why are you surprised?").
We started the day with a rare and delicious home made breakfast in the beautiful warm home in Moncton and finally here we were at a new warm abode in Amherst, in between it was hilly and very wet with few stops, as stops were not fun today. We did not know quite what to expect because Emile simply said on the phone that "we will figure out dinner once you arrive" in response to questions about what we should bring. Well that was a front... as we dripped in the back hall, we looked through to the candle lit table in the kitchen to see a wonderful dinner all laid out, served aesthetically with contrasting colours of pickles on each plate.
After a tremendous meal of fresh haddock, we were indulged with lots of wonderful stories and a tour of the garden and house, giving us a window into Emile's doings of late. We realized that though Emile is 20 years older than the oldest of us, his physical and mental activity level seemed as high as ours of late, and obviously we are no slouches. For those who do not know him, Emile is a Meti/aboriginal elder who spends his life educating young and old about "Mother Nature's Book" and aboriginal culture and spirituality. He had just spent the last three weeks providing educational programs 10 hours a day in provincial parks to a wide range of visitors and Nova Scotian.
We walked through his garden/backyard forest, which had started out as grass 25 years ago like the adjacent yards, and now is a rich and varied garden forest. We admired the amazing elm tree totem pole with bear, wolf and eagle in the front yard— the tree had Dutch elm disease and had to be cut, so Emile cut the trunk 12 feet up in the air and went to work carving out the creatures that "were already there." We went down in the basement to see his new workshop filled with beads, tanning hides, drum hoops and talking and walking sticks in various stages of development. Then there was the certificate honouring him for contributing to preserving a large tract of land now owned by the Nature Conservancy in Pugwash and the cards commemorating the moment when he nearly killed himself last year by getting his leg hopelessly stuck in a hole while hiking alone below the high tide line. And all the while his values shone through, all the beads come from used clothing stores, all the compost and weeds go to building the backyard soil, everything is reused in tune with Mother Nature. We were tired by the end of it, though he had the energy to go much longer into the night. We heard stories from his youth when he paid room and board at 14 while working in the coal mine, one of 10 kids who survived on bread and molasses (it actually sounded good). Next month the coal miner's kid has dinner with the Governor General. There were reflections on Evalyn, his wife, who died last year, along with our sharing of some of our adventures of the the past three months. We were inspired by Emile's passion, energy, dedication and work, and thankful for another amazing and inspiring person along the way who has provided us with caring hospitality. Thank you!

Day 88: St. Edouard to Moncton (the wonderful tale of bees)
I need to clarify about the lack of the NBSC for the last few days. The NBSC was devised help us write about our experiences in New Brunswick and judge them fairly. After several days it several things became very clear. The weather in the maritimes is the pits this summer. Wether in PEI, Nova scotia or New Brunswick, it may be a little unfair to score make New Brunswick suffer for our global changing climate.
Most importantly however, we have come to the conclusion that despite what thoughts we might have on the visual splendor of the place, new Brunswick is filled with so many generous and beautiful people that it outshines anything else that happens. So with that we end the NBSC with the conclusion that it's people are some the nicest we have met and that trumps all else... A perfect example of this is today's wonderful visit with My friend Jocelyne's Parents Gerry and Gerald. Here's how it all went down...
Although we would have loved to stay at the vineyard campground and go swimming in the ridiculously warm Northumberland stright ocean water for another day (and maybe more), we have a strict schedule to follow if we are going to make Lorax by the 15th and spend a couple days with emile along the way. Eeeks!
My friend Jocelyn has generously invited us to stay at her parents house in Moncton.
The way there had a few interesting stops but was for the most part a rather simple and short trip into the city of moncton. The dunes ecocenter was gorgeous to behold but our walk along the boardwalk was interrupted by a large Strom bearing in on us.
So we flew along the coast, staying ahead of the darkness. I have never seen so many blue herons at one time silently stalking their underwater prey. it was a beautiful and from a fishes perspective dangerous sight to behold.
Leah's daily French fry obsession brought us to a chip wagon called chez leos and although the chips weren't stellar, one of the owners sons was very excited about our trip and came over to chat.
Overall, the way was flat, the road a bit bumpy but with one exception we manged to stay dry before pulling up to Gerry and Geralds amazing house in downtown Moncton.
Gerald is a biologist working for the department of fisheries while Gerry is a sculpture artist and teacher. Both are the most interesting, hospitable storytelling hosts one could ask for.
Our bikes found a home in Gerry's studio alongside her work in progress art piece about the dissapearence of the elephants in Africa. Dozens of small clay elephants mounted on tiles kept the bikes safe while we relaxed and chatted inside their beautiful old home.
We talked about bike stories , tales of Jocelyn's childhood and above all about bees! Gerry and Gerald have a hive of honey bees taken care of by a bee keeper friend in the heart of downtown Moncton. Before even seeing the hive and it's busy inhabitants, you can tell they are there by the transformation they have made to their garden. Flowers abound every where, while the yellow and black wonder bugs have pollinated their pear tree so that it sags heavy with fruit. Gerry and Gerald take great pride in their garden and the bees magnify it 100 fold. We chatted about bees for a long time but for the sake of space I will say simply that the sophistication and structure of bee society is amazing. Just think, if everyone had bees what a lush place even the city could be. While listening to their tales, I couldn't help but think the inner lives of bees would make for a fascinating film... Hmmm
After a delicious dinner of home made spaghetti, fresh salad and home grown hand picked gooseberrycrisp, we were very content to crawl into warm dry beds as it absolutely poured rain outside especially since the forcast called for 40-60mm over the next day. Thank you Gerry and Gerald and Jocelyn for your hospitality. We hope you come to visit us in Wolfville so we came return the favor!

Most importantly however, we have come to the conclusion that despite what thoughts we might have on the visual splendor of the place, new Brunswick is filled with so many generous and beautiful people that it outshines anything else that happens. So with that we end the NBSC with the conclusion that it's people are some the nicest we have met and that trumps all else... A perfect example of this is today's wonderful visit with My friend Jocelyne's Parents Gerry and Gerald. Here's how it all went down...
Although we would have loved to stay at the vineyard campground and go swimming in the ridiculously warm Northumberland stright ocean water for another day (and maybe more), we have a strict schedule to follow if we are going to make Lorax by the 15th and spend a couple days with emile along the way. Eeeks!

Day 87: St. Margret to St. Edourd (The Million Dollar Question)
Up early for a wonderful breakfast with James and Juanita (we heartily recommend Juanita's blueberry cucumber smoothies).
The morning ride was not scintalating... New Brunswick scrub forest with simple white houses bordering the road. Ahh, but sure enough we found a wonderful market and community breakfast at the community centre in Kouchibiquack (spelling) about snack time.
Then a long stretch of slogging into the wind through scrub to the coast. A beautiful ride along the shore to St. Eduard and it was time for the nightly camping challenge...
A bit of backstory is needed to provide context for this evening's challenge. About half the nights we have had a creative campsite: under a car port, next to an ice cream shop, in a high school, at a farmer's market, with the cows, at a solar farm, at the bike shop or in some wonderful person's yard.
The other half the time we end up in a campground populated by RVs and campers. In BC there were reasonably priced provincial campgrounds (though the facilities were not great). The Prairies have wonderful free campgrounds in the small towns (they deserve applause). Western Ontario has great provincial parks. About Sault St. Marie the trouble began and from the Bruce pennisula east there was the nightly fiasco unless a creative solution was in the works.
The problems can be categorized as unpredictability and injustice. So typically we pull up to a campground office and two people go in and everyone else waits to hear of our fate on the road. Are we biking further or not? In Quebec all the raging and negotiating cell to Ginny because her French is the only one able to appreciate the subtleties of the individual situation. This brings us to the injustice. Until Ontario an expensive campground was 30-35 bucks which we were fine to pay though still pricey for a little grass and a bathroom. RVs paid $35-40. But then they started saying that five people had to have two sites. $60-70- ridiculous, especially when a monster RV was paying $40. Other places have "tent rules". You can put six people in one huge tent but you can only have one tent a site so we need three sites for0 our three petite camping tents. One place it cost $30 extra unless Shane slept in our tent. Other times we put the third tent up covertly at dusk. The biggest scene was in Trois Rivière where there was such a ruckus that the campground manager took us to his backyard. So back to tonight and St. Edouard...
As we approached the town we were hoping for a small friendly fishing village. Instead we started seeing tons of RVs everywhere in yards on the shore. We quickly realized we were approaching a beachy tourist locale, not a fishing village. There were so many RVs that we suspected cottages were renting out their yards to them. Then we saw the first of the two possible campgrounds in the town. Our hearts fell into our hands. It was the biggest and ugliest RV park we had ever seen. Despite being on the coastal road, it was in the scrub alder on the inland side with RVs, packed like sardines as far as you could see- and more were turning in (there was a heated pool but for the life of us, we couldn't figure out why anyone would enter such a place)... We continued in a state of despair, only one place left and camping by the side of the road was not possible in this madhouse. We saw the sign from a distance- gulp. The.sign said Chez Maury- Vignoble et Ferme.
What was this about? We looked to the inland side and there was a cute old farm house, a barn and a comfy grassy field. To the water side was a beautiful ocean beach.
No fighting was necessary, one site was suitable for all of us. And after a great swim in the warm water of the Bay of Chaleur, we were invited in for a free wine tasting as this was also a vineyard! The gregarious owner made us very welcome, speaking slowly so we could understand the French (we were the only Anglophones in the group and he did not speak English... For a major portion of New Brunswick, French is the public first language). Only Ginny understood most of it but the rest of us put on a good show, smiling, nodding and laughing with everyone else when it seemed it was a joke. The wine was great and Leah was in heaven with the blueberry and strawberry dessert wines. So we didn't pay for a second site but they happily had us for bottles of wine for gifts. What a great place, pleasantly busy with space for all and a wonderful friendly atmosphere. The million dollar question is why most everyone else chose the mega RV park?... Hmmm.

Day 86: Tracadie-Shelia to St. Margrets
Another morning, another day on the bikes. We rode out of the campground on schedule, but were soon distracted by the big Superstore in Tracadie (we went in for cheese and came out with 2 days of food).
The plan for the day was to ride down the southern coast of the Acadian Peninsula to Mirimichi and then head out due south along the highway and find somewhere to camp out in the wilderness around 20km outside of town. However, unlike yesterday when the coastal road was right on the ocean with pretty scenery, the road today was consistently about 5pm inland. Boo-urns!
Right outside of town we had a first for the trip - riding on a limited access highway. It felt strange cycling up the shoulder of the on-ramp with cars accelerating hard next to us, but the highway itself had a nice wide shoulder and sobriety wasn't any problem. However, with the high speed traffic and a straight road through nowhere, it wasn't a great experience. Really made us glad of our decision to avoid the Trans-Canada and other highways whenever possible, you really don't get the same experience at all, it's just passing the kms and driving on through.
However this was only a little bypass around town so a couple km later we were back to the regular rural highway. And that's what it was for the next 70km - scrubby trees, straight roads, and a constant sting of houses in the middle of nowhere punctuated randomly by a small gas/food store. The settlement pattern here in NB is quite strange and different than we've seen in most other places. There are big towns, but there don't seem to be many/any small "towns" as I recognize them (clustered communities with multiple streets and a mixture of residential and business together). Here, everything is just stung out along the one main road. "Rural sprawl" is a strange term but that's what comes to mind. It's nit the kind if place I'd want to live and it makes me wonder what everyone does out here, but obviously theres some benefit to it because it's growing, and people seem to be happy where they are. Doesn't make for very pretty riding through, just drive on through.
For lunch we took a aide road out to the coast and had a wonderful picnic overlooking the bay. Though the sun was out in force, so was the wind and so combined with a pleasant/cool temperature, some of us got a little chilled. If you didn't know the date, would you have guessed this was August?
So after a nice (bundled up) lunch and snooze, we were ready to go again, until Alan saw the biggest patch of the largest, most amazing wild blueberries ever! Needless to say, l
Leah was in like a shot, and no one else needed much convincing. In fact, what they needed convincing about was leaving - it was 1hr and 3 litres of blueberries latter that we were finally back on the move. What an amazing find though! Sorry to the bear who's had it's wye on those bushes :)
Getting through Mirimichi was pretty easy - except the hellish highway bridge. Narrow lanes, no shoulder, speeding cars and the only place for bikes was a really high and narrow sidewalk. The view must have been nice, but I was totally consumed watching the concrete in front of me because one slight wobble was all that was needed to send us falling into the traffic. The saner ones gave up the pretenses and walked their bikes across. Don't try this at home folks!
Then, after 15km of wilderness we'd reached decision time - where and how to camp. We were stopped on the side of the highway and had just decided to ask for water at the next community when we saw a biker catch up with us from behind. The panniers made us assume he was another long-distance biker, but we were only partly right. Turns out James was on his way home from work (35km each way) in Mirimichi, and lived in just ahead where we were looking to stop. And as soon as he found out we were on the big bike trip and looking to stop soon, he not only offered us water but also his backyard and supper to boot, and wouldn't take no for an answer (not that we really tried). So we pulled into his lovely house and by the time we had our tents up, he and his wife (also a cyclist - did a 3 week cycle tour of Scotland last fall) had cooked us supper and so we sat down to a delicious home cooked meal at a table with all the civilized fixings, and some wonderful conversation. So nice to spend some time with fellow bikers and share stories! It was a night we certainly won't forget - thanks so much! Just goes to show, no matter what a place may look like, there's always amazing people around!

Day 85: Nigadoo to Tracadie-Shelia (the Acadian peninsula)
We woke up to fog but we were happy because it wasn't rain! We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast with wild blueberries and a few raspberries that Leah found behind the bike store.
We were very thankful to have a nice dry spot on the ground under the tent that roger the awesome bike store owner had set up for us the day before.
Off on our bikes, we flew though Bathurst and out onto the wild rugged Acadien Penninsula.
The roadside was filled with quaint house decorated in red white and blue with a yellow star (the colors of the Acadian flag). There were lawn chairs, telephone poles, window shutters, whole houses, cars, light houses ,fences and anything else you imagine was painted in these 4 striking colors that stood out in the gray fog.
We hoped for sun so we could see more of the coastline, unfortunately what we got was a huge mass of fog. It was tough enough seeing the cars coming from the front and rear let alone our hands! Worse yet it was cold!
Emerging from the fog, we saw a beautiful beach and island...NOT! There was a $2 fee per person to use the 2 shaky picnic tables and port-a-potties and walk on the beach!
What a rip off, so we kept on moving. lucky we did!
Only 8km down the way in grande anse, leahs French fry spidie senses picked up the sent and sent us down to the quay. As if in a bible story, the sun broke through the clouds and shone down on the little canteen, nestled in the cove across from a beautiful sandy beach.
Leah has been a French fry conesiur since day 1 and though the Quebecois have pretty great fries, she was still looking for the one "mason de frite" to rule them all. The sun shining down was clearly a heavenly sign because In this small Acadian port Leah tasted the most amazing fries ever. She was literally in heaven.
Back on the road in the beautiful sunshine , we were greeted by some "mal-mannered" drivers. A slow moving truck approached us as the cars behind it began to get impatient.
The first truck passed veering out and into our lane and coming quite close to us before sharply pulling back onto his side of the road. Clearly the other trailing campers thought this was a good idea too! One by then they pull out and passed us, forcing us off into gravel because there was no shoulder and we weren't in the mood for a head on collision... What arrogance...
Still , after days of fog and rain, we were delighted with our new friend the sun, and kept our spirits up while passing through the bustling tourist town of caraquet on the awesome paved bike paths along the shore.
To make up time due to yesterday's rainstorm we pushed ahead and did an extra 25 km into Lacadie-Shelia. After a long day we settled at yet another over-priced trailer park. At least it had a good view of the lake.
We hope that this sunny trend continues and sends us safely and warmly to Moncton in a few days to meet with our friend jocelyns parents!

Leah has been a French fry conesiur since day 1 and though the Quebecois have pretty great fries, she was still looking for the one "mason de frite" to rule them all. The sun shining down was clearly a heavenly sign because In this small Acadian port Leah tasted the most amazing fries ever. She was literally in heaven.
Back on the road in the beautiful sunshine , we were greeted by some "mal-mannered" drivers. A slow moving truck approached us as the cars behind it began to get impatient.
The first truck passed veering out and into our lane and coming quite close to us before sharply pulling back onto his side of the road. Clearly the other trailing campers thought this was a good idea too! One by then they pull out and passed us, forcing us off into gravel because there was no shoulder and we weren't in the mood for a head on collision... What arrogance...
Still , after days of fog and rain, we were delighted with our new friend the sun, and kept our spirits up while passing through the bustling tourist town of caraquet on the awesome paved bike paths along the shore.
To make up time due to yesterday's rainstorm we pushed ahead and did an extra 25 km into Lacadie-Shelia. After a long day we settled at yet another over-priced trailer park. At least it had a good view of the lake.
We hope that this sunny trend continues and sends us safely and warmly to Moncton in a few days to meet with our friend jocelyns parents!
